Region sheet G-05
Western Turkey has bathed since antiquity. The terraces of Pamukkale and the Roman pool above them are the famous part; the quieter part is the olive coast around Ayvalık, where hot springs rise near the sea.
When to go
Spring and autumn suit both protocols. Summer inland is very hot, and Pamukkale is crowded. The olive coast protocol is timed for the harvest in October and November and also runs in April and May.
How it reads by season
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Winter | Rain on the coast; no departures |
| Spring | Both protocols, flowers on the hills |
| Summer | Heat inland; no departures |
| Autumn | Olive harvest and warm sea |
One of our leaders grew up in Izmir and leads both Turkish protocols. Meals in Turkey are long and generous, so we keep lunches out of the plan.
