Region sheet G-04
The south of Tuscany is volcanic underneath. Warm water surfaces at Saturnia, Bagno Vignoni and Bagni San Filippo, in a country of farms, hill towns and roads lined with cypress.
When to go
Saturnia is our winter destination: the pools are warmer than the air and the farmhouses are quiet from October to May. The Val d’Orcia walks need cool weather, so they run in spring and autumn and never in high summer.
How it reads by season
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Winter | Saturnia at its quietest |
| Spring | Val d’Orcia green; both protocols |
| Summer | Too hot to walk; no departures |
| Autumn | Harvest, both protocols |
Tuscan farmhouses close for a few weeks after the olive harvest. We plan around those weeks and tell you when a date is not possible.
