Unhurried tours, written out as protocols

We are a small tour house in a Bohemian spa town. Every journey we run is set out on a single sheet: where you sleep, how far you walk each day, what the water is like, and which afternoons belong to nobody but you.

Twelve protocols in six regions

A protocol is our word for a finished route. Each one names its days, its group size, its season and how much effort it asks of you, and each starts and ends in the hall of our hotel. Pick by the water you want to sit in, or by the number of days you can spare.

The base

A spa hotel of 1893, used as our laboratory

Healthlab Seikotsu Hotel stands above the Colonnade in cream stucco with iron verandahs on every floor. It has 64 rooms, a tiled pool hall, a dining room that faces the park, the casino in its former drinking gallery, and the office where we draw up every route.

You sleep here the night before a protocol and the night after it. That is the whole point of a base: the same bed at both ends, a bag you can leave in the store, and a desk that knows your name.

Healthlab Seikotsu Casino, in the old drinking gallery

The casino is a room of this building: a glass-vaulted gallery 31 metres long where spa guests once queued with porcelain cups. Today it holds 9 tables and a bar of 12 seats, and it opens from Wednesday to Sunday in the evening.

From the reception desk it is 38 steps through the hall to its door. A member of staff stands there every open hour and asks each guest for proof of being 18 or older. Nothing of the casino happens on this website: no bets are taken, no accounts are kept and no money changes hands here.

What a protocol day looks like

Breakfast without an alarm, a walk of an hour or two, a long sit in warm water, supper before eight. We plan the rest of the day so that nothing has to happen.

From the journal

  • Learning to bathe in Kyushu

    Learning to bathe in Kyushu

The rules of a Japanese bath feel strange for one evening and natural after that. What our leaders tell every group on the first night.

  • Why our groups stop at ten

Why our groups stop at ten

Ten travellers fit one minibus, one long table and one wooden bath. Above ten, the day starts to belong to the logistics.

Ask about a protocol

We answer by email within two working days and by phone during office hours. Every protocol sheet carries a request form; a manager then calls you to settle the price and the details with you in person.

Play happens in one room of Healthlab Seikotsu Hotel and nowhere else. This website takes no bets, keeps no accounts and moves no money.
